Hellige pH meter

Simple pH soil testing

The pH value for the soil is a solid indicator that shows whether the soil is reacting acidic, neutral or alkaline. The soil pH value influences numerous properties, such as nutrient availability, structure formation and soil activity. The pH value is indicated on a scale of 0 -14. The type of crop will be the determining factor for the optimum pH value for agricultural and horticultural use. The optimum pH value for most plants is between 5.5 - 7.0.

At pH values below 5.5, the availability of main nutrients (NPK) and secondary macronutrients (magnesium, calcium) decreases significantly. The trace nutrients iron, manganese, copper and zinc, on the other hand, are more available in the acidic range and significantly less available in the alkaline range.

Initially, it is recommended that users determine the pH value of the soil using a simple method in the field. The Hellige pH meter is a simple colourimetric quick test manufactured in-house according to the original design consisting of

– pH measuring plate with colour scale
– small spoon for soil samples and drip bottle
– bottle, 50 ml, for approx. 30 to 40 applications
– Instructions with guideline values
